Case Study – Doubling the shareholder value of a company in four years

Powercoal Pty Ltd – a subsidiary of Pacific Power

The Managing Director of Powercoal faced the complex challenge of:

1. Building value into the current assets and operational value of the current business in a highly competitive coal and electricity generation environment and

2. Increasing shareholder value to maximize value received from the planned sale of the state owned and operated coal mines.

Bede Boyle assisted the Managing Director in business planning and deployment including documenting board submissions and presentations for both the Powercoal Board and its parent company Pacific Power Board to grow the business profitably including:

1. Strategies for re-aligning business units to the prevailing market conditions to realise their inherent profit potential

2. Strategies to improve productivity and profitability of mature assets to secure the value of the current business

3. Strategies for staged development of the $170m Mandalong Mine development at a time when capital was constrained

4. Development of presentations to the Board and the NSW Government on the targeted exploration of a new previously unknown coal deposit; now discovered as the Anvil Hill open cut resource suitable for a large scale open cut development. This is the largest coal discovery in NSW for 100 years and is now owned and operated by Glencore as the 13mtpa open cut mine named Mangoola.

These strategic initiatives required securing the support of the Powercoal Board (Chairman Gene Herbert) Pacific Power Board (Chairman Professor Frederick Hilmer). Support of the Chairman and Board required demonstration that Powercoal had a robust strategy together with the executive ability to implement the strategy. This was achieved by:

1. Strengthening and aligning mine management and maintenance capability

2. Reporting against KPIs developed for all business critical dimensions

3. Development of a strong in house business analysis capability

4. Rigorous feasibility studies and business risk assessment

5. Rigorous development of strategic and business plans

6. Achieving a very high standard of board reports and board presentations

The success of these strategic initiatives was realized in the acquisition of Powercoal by Centennial Coal for $331m in 2002.

Bede’s support was a critical success factor during a very turbulent period and it is gratifying to note that the strategic initiatives we initiated have been continued by Centennial Coal as adding value to their portfolio and increasing their shareholder value.”

Business Growth Strategy in a Mature Fiercely Competitive Market

Dear Bede

HiValue Strategies Future Directions Workshop

“The team building process was beneficial in establishing common grounds and goals, particularly as the Strategic Workshop involved two senior managers who joined our organisation in the past nine months. At the conclusion of the workshop we had agreed on a suitable organisation structure with defined responsibilities and a specific marketing and branding strategy. Your management expertise in facilitating these changes and in providing an innovative ‘view from the outside’ is highly valued.”

K Wayne Perry Managing Director Wayne Perry & Associates Pty Limited, 26 August 1994

As an outcome of the Future Directions Workshop Wayne Perry & Associates was rebranded as PACRIM Environmental Pty Limited. Bede was subsequently appointed as Director Business Development for PACRIM Environmental [1995 – 2008] to guide business growth strategy.
